Adjustment of Status

Apply for a work permit (EAD). Required if you need to work while your green card application is pending.

Application for Naturalization

Apply for US citizenship. You must be a permanent resident for 5 years (3 years if married to a US citizen).

Travel Document

Apply for advance parole to travel outside the US while your adjustment of status is pending.

Remove Conditions on Residence

Petition for Alien Fiancee

US citizens file this to bring a fiancee to the US for marriage. You must marry within 90 days of entry.

Affidavit of Support

Required for most family-based petitions. Proves you can financially support the immigrant at 125% of the federal poverty line.

Application for Asylum

Apply for asylum if you have been persecuted or fear persecution in your home country. Must file within 1 year of arrival.

Immigration Glossary

A-Number
Alien Registration Number. A unique 7-9 digit number assigned by USCIS to immigrants. Found on green cards and immigration documents.
Adjustment of Status
The process of applying for permanent residence (a green card) while you are physically present in the United States.
Beneficiary
The person who will receive the immigration benefit. For example, the family member you are sponsoring.
Consular Processing
When a visa applicant applies for an immigrant visa at a US Embassy or Consulate abroad, rather than adjusting status inside the US.
EAD
Employment Authorization Document, also called a work permit. Allows non-citizens to legally work in the United States.
I-94
Arrival/Departure Record. Documents your lawful admission to the US. Available electronically at i94.cbp.dhs.gov.
Naturalization
The process by which a permanent resident becomes a US citizen. Requires meeting residency, physical presence, and other requirements.
Petitioner
The US citizen or permanent resident who files an immigration petition on behalf of another person.
Priority Date
The date USCIS receives your petition. Determines your place in line for visa numbers in categories with annual limits.
RFE
Request for Evidence. A notice from USCIS asking for additional documents or information before they decide your case. Not a denial.
Service Center
A USCIS facility that processes immigration applications. Different forms are routed to different service centers.
TPS
Temporary Protected Status. Granted to nationals of countries experiencing armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions.
USCIS
United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. The federal agency that processes immigration applications and petitions.
Visa Bulletin
Monthly publication by the State Department showing which priority dates are current for visa number availability.
